The last two years should have made it more clear than ever, SEO is an industry where you need to move fast. This is a big advantage for the start ups and smaller firms because, as you probably already know, big is slow.
If you want your company to grow to a big size you need to get scalable processes in place, this is the only way. You can’t count on that one smart employee to do all the smart stuff in the company, everyone needs to work in the same direction. When you do this you’re actualyl able to get very good results out of even your junior employees as they have direction.
However, SEO, in opposite to most other businesses, changes rapidly all the time. This is because the rules are changing. Imagine running a restaurant in a city where everyone wants all you can eat meat fiestas for years up until one day when they all of a sudden just care for tiny special dishes like hand rolled sushi or just parma ham. That is exactly what happened when Google rolled out the Panda-update.
This means that if you grow to big, you need to still maintain that quickness that is usually confined to the start ups. Don’t get me wrong here, you definately need to get the processes in place but remember to give room for change.
